French-German star event: What can Merkel and Macron agree upon?

12. december 2017 kl. 16.00 - 17.30 CET

[:en]

A German-French summit on the future of European cooperation

Sylvie Kauffmann, the editorial director and a former editor in chief of Le Monde, and Stefan Kornelius, international section head at Süddeutsche Zeitung will give their assessments of where the European Union is heading after the French and German elections.

For several decades, France has been in a crisis of low growth and high unemployment due to lack of reforms, while Germany, with a reformed labour market, acts as a European job machine. This imbalance in economic performance has weakened the formerly strong French-German axis in the EU.

With Brexit in Britain and President Donald Trump the United States, a need for French-German leadership in the EU has emerged. At the same time, the election of president Macron has increased expectations that France can carry through reforms.

One of the key questions is whether the new leadership in France and the re-election of Merkel has generated a new momentum for the French-German axis to relaunch European cooperation? And if so, what will be the consequences for the Danish EU-membership?

Prorector for Copenhagen University and Chairman of the Danish Foreign Policy Society Lykke Friis is moderator.

AFTER THE MEETING, IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO WISH EACH OTHER MERRY CHRISTMAS OVER A GLASS OF WINE.
