The New Geopolitical Reality: Should EU Rethink It’s Relationship to China?
31. marts 2025 17.00 - 18.30
The recent Munich Security Conference, President Trump’s repeated insistence on annexing Greenland, and his administration's decision to negotiate an end to the Ukraine war directly with Russia, initially sidelining the EU and Ukraine, have furthermore only underscored this shift: The US no longer unequivocally views Europe as a strategic partner in maintaining the global order. Instead, Europe is increasingly seen as a competitor in an emerging multipolar world.
At the Munich Security Conference, much of the spotlight was on US Vice President J.D. Vance’s speech, which struck an unusually critical tone toward the domestic policies of several European nations. However, equally noteworthy – though less highlighted – was the address by China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Wang positioned Beijing as a stabilizing force in a new world order, championing multilateralism and the international rule of law.
As the global order transitions rapidly from unipolarity to multipolarity, a pressing question emerges: Should Europe reassess its approach to China? If the US increasingly perceives Europe as a rival rather than an ally, should Europe automatically align with Washington’s adversarial stance toward Beijing?
To explore these critical questions, we have assembled a panel of leading China experts to examine the evolving geopolitical landscape and the EU’s and Denmark’s role within it. What opportunities could deeper cooperation with China offer – and what challenges remain?
