Reflections on Europe’s Security with Judy Dempsey
29. april 2025 17.00 - 18.30
The United States' alignment with Russia, Iran, North Korea, and other pro-Russian states in the United Nations General Assembly on a resolution condemning Russian aggression in Ukraine—on the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion—has sent shockwaves through Europe. Adding to the uncertainty, the U.S. vice president’s sharp rebukes of Europe at the Munich Security Conference and, most recently, the catastrophic Oval Office meeting between Ukrainian President Zelensky and U.S. President Trump have intensified concerns about the future of transatlantic relations.
The key question across Europe is whether the transatlantic alliance can be salvaged—and if the United States pulls back, can the Europeans take charge of their own security, let alone continue supporting Ukraine militarily in its quest for victory?
Is the transatlantic relationship at a breaking point? And what does this mean for European security?
To discuss these critical questions at this historic juncture, the Danish Foreign Policy Society has invited Judy Dempsey, nonresident senior fellow at Carnegie Europe.
From 2012 to 2024, Judy Dempsey served as editor-in-chief of the Strategic Europe blog. She is also the author of The Merkel Phenomenon (Das Phänomen Merkel, Körber-Stiftung Edition, 2013).
She worked for the International Herald Tribune from 2004 to 2011 as its Germany and Eastern Europe correspondent and later as a columnist from 2011 to September 2013. Prior to that, she was the diplomatic correspondent for the Financial Times in Brussels from 2001 onward, covering NATO and EU enlargement. Between 1990 and 2001, she held various roles at the Financial Times, including Jerusalem bureau chief (1996–2001), Berlin correspondent (1992–1996), and Eastern Europe correspondent in London (1990–1992). During the 1980s, Dempsey reported on Central and Eastern Europe for the Financial Times, The Irish Times, and The Economist.
