The Future of the Transatlantic Relationship with Ulrich Speck

19. maj 2026   17.00 - 18.30

The transatlantic relationship had always had its challenges. But this time…

Following the second election of US president Donald J. Trump, the transatlantic relationship between Europe and the United States have undergone significant changes in regard to security, trade and geopolitical priorities.

The Trump Administration’s controversial rhetoric towards Greenland, Ukraine and NATO – along with its current war in Iran and involvement in the Middle East – have put a great strain on the relationship between the United States and its own transatlantic allies of Europe and Canada.

In response to this, European leaders are increasingly seeking to diversify their strategic and economic partnerships beyond the United States, strengthening ties with amongst others India and Mercosur.

To shed light on these political changes, we are joined by writer, researcher and foreign policy analyst,
Ulrich Speck, who will bring his expertise and knowledge on the transatlantic relationship in a new world order.

As one of the world’s leading geopolitical analysts, Ulrich Speck has worked with policy institutes on both sides of the Atlantic. He has written for academic journals and major newspapers on topics ranging from political history to modern foreign policy. In the last decade, he has made a particular mark as an interpreter of the ongoing changes to the world order, both internal and external to the Western alliance.

Ulrich Speck’s most recent book
Der Wille zur Weltmacht (the Will for World Domination) examines the relationship between Russia and China. It paints a picture of a quasi-alliance between two revisionist powers that have been tacitly cooperating for decades to undermine the liberal world order. This, the book argues, is the root cause of the global instability that is now becoming apparent in Ukraine, the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East and internally in the American-led alliance.

Introductory remarks will be given by
Carsten Søndergaard, who has served as Denmark’s ambassador to Russia, NATO and Germany.
