Beyond competition: Is a US-China grand bargain emerging?

US-China relations have run a remarkable course since the start of the second Trump administration. The trade war and strategic competition have receded into the background as Washington stabilises relations and explores a commercial detente with Beijing. Meanwhile, the Chinese government has sought to improve its relations with Western countries unsettled by Trump's erratic policies and avoided confronting the US over Iran and other regional issues.
Ahead of a much-anticipated summit in Beijing between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, this seminar takes stock of relations between the world's two most powerful countries. Where are US-China relations heading? Can the two sides strike a deal in Beijing? Has Trump silenced the China hawks in Washington? Does great power competition persist underneath the surface, and will it reemerge?
To help unpack these questions, we are joined by one of the leading scholars of China and US-China relations. Dr. Evan Medeiros, the Penner Family Chair in Asian Studies at Georgetown University, brings a unique combination of research expertise and practical experience. He previously served as Special Assistant to President Barack Obama and Senior Director for Asia at the National Security Council, where he played a central role in shaping US policy and participated directly in several US-China summits.
