U35: A Swedish Perspective on Economic Security

As tensions in Europe persist and hybrid threats evolve, the intersection between economics, security, and influence has never been more crucial to understand.
This session will offer a Swedish perspective on economic security, starting with an overview of Swedish–Danish defence cooperation by Defence Attaché, Colonel Barvér followed by Jörgen Holmlund presenting his recent research report mapping Russian business interests in Sweden.
The discussion will explore how economic networks and state interests intertwine across borders. By tracing ownership data across hundreds of entities, Holmlund’s report reveals a complex web of interests involving offshore companies, sanctioned oligarchs, and financial intermediaries — a pattern consistent with Russia’s global strategy of influence and covert acquisition.

Presenters:
• Colonel Ola Barvér serves as Sweden’s Defence Attaché in Copenhagen. As Defence Attaché, Colonel Barvér acts as senior adviser to the Swedish Ambassador on defence and security policy issues, while monitoring and assessing developments in the regional security environment. His mission also includes identifying areas of cooperation between Sweden and Denmark — a task made all the more significant now that the two nations are NATO allies.
• Jörgen Holmlund has served within both the Swedish Police and the Armed Forces, with extensive experience in international cooperation, security policy, and intelligence. He participated as an expert in the government inquiry Utlandsspioneriutredningen and contributed to the United Nations Peacekeeping Military Intelligence Handbook (UNPKMIHB) in 2018. Jörgen also teaches Intelligence Studies at the Swedish Defence University.
The event will be hosted by H.E. Hans Wallmark, Ambassador of Sweden to the Kingdom of Denmark.
