Building Bridges: Mercosur, CELAC, and the Quest for Latin American Unity

What can three Latin American ambassadors teach us about their continent’s quest for regional cooperation and unity?
When people think of regional integration, the European Union often comes to mind. But across the Atlantic, Latin America has been weaving its own story of cooperation – a story full of ambition, setbacks, solidarity, and renewed hope. From Mercosur to CELAC, these regional institutions have brought countries together in search of common ground, while also reflecting the tensions and diversity of the region. These projects also have wide-ranging impacts and links to the rest of the world. The polemical and not-yet-finalized trade deal between the EU and Mercosur is a testament to this.
As part of our event series focusing on Latin America this fall, on this special occasion U35 will be joined by Their Excellencies, the ambassadors of Colombia, Mexico, and Argentina. Through their first-hand experiences and academic prowess, they will guide us through the history and challenges of Latin American integration, and what we, in turn, in Europe can also learn from this. We will talk about the big players of the respective blocs, their priorities, the nitty-gritty details of how these blocs work, and the opportunities that make Latin American regionalism such a fascinating and unique phenomenon.

• H.E. Catalina Velasco Campuzano, Ambassador of Colombia in Denmark, and former Minister of Housing, City and Territory of Colombia from 2022 to 2024.
• H.E. Norma Pensado Moreno, Ambassador of Mexico in Denmark.
• H.E. Julio Mercado, Ambassador of Argentina in Denmark.
• Moderated by Felipe Branner, Board Member of U35.
The event will consist of brief presentations by each of the panelists, a discussion, and a Q&A-session with the audience. Anybody with interest in Latin America, international politics or history is welcome. No prior knowledge of the subject required.
