Russian Economic Outlook with Dr. Alexander Kolyandr

4. juni 2025   17.30 - 19.00

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Alexander Kolyandr from the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) for a timely discussion on Russia’s economic trajectory and its wider geopolitical implications.

Kolyandr, who is British-Ukrainian, has a distinguished background as a strategist at Credit Suisse in both London and Moscow and formerly served as Chief Correspondent for The Wall Street Journal in Moscow.

Kolyandr will offer his insights on the current state of the Russian economy, the pressures shaping the country internally and externally, and what a potential shift in the sanctions policy could mean for Russia and for Europe.

No matter the outcome of the ongoing ceasefire negotiations over the war in Ukraine, Russia will remain an acute security threat to Ukraine, Europe, and the United States. The Western sanctions regime imposed on Russia in the wake of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 had clear successes, even if the threat of these sanctions failed to stop the invasion itself. However, its effectiveness has also had undeniable limits, and often unintended consequences.

Kolyandr will provide an overview of Western sanctions policy toward Russia as it currently stands, outlining its largest successes and clearest shortcomings, as well as articulating new ways to apply acute pressure on Russia, should the Kremlin choose to open a new front in its effort to undermine Western commitment to limiting Russian aggression.

This event will be in English.
